Cherry Street Housing, Grocery and Community Kitchen

Vallejo, California

In partnership with non-profit organizations 4th Second and Firm Foundation Community Housing, FOG Studio is designing an exciting three-story mixed-use building on a vacant lot in an underserved neighborhood in Vallejo. This project will provide 9 affordable housing units, including seven deeply-needed family-sized units of 2 and 3 bedrooms.

Located in a “food desert”, this building will provide on the ground floor a community grocery store and deli/cafe, modeled after similar successful groceries in the Oakland area. It also provides a community kitchen: a multi-purpose facility for small business incubation, meeting space, pop-up events and cooking and nutrition classes. Both commercial spaces will open up towards Cherry Street to welcoming outdoor seating.

The extremely tight (7,200 SF) site and three-foot vertical elevation change makes for challenging planning, especially since the commercial uses require significant access points for deliveries, trash pickup, and the like. Support from the City of Vallejo will be key in solving the logistical problems and achieving a successful project that will improve quality of life in the area.
